Jean Dollison

Jean Dollison

It was a typical day for 42-year-old Jean Dollison. Running an outside errand for work, she was driving down the Lloyd Expressway when a driver crossed the median and caused a head on collision with Jean and four other vehicles.

When EMS arrived, Jean was critical and was taken to the nearest acute care hospital. Upon arrival, Jean was determined to be in a coma and needed to be intubated.

After more than two weeks at the hospital, Jean was transferred to a long term acute care hospital where she remained in a coma until Dec. 31, 2012.

On Jan. 17, 2013, Jean was admitted to HealthSouth Deaconess Rehabilitation Hospital. HealthSouth Deaconess is Joint Commission Certified for Disease-Specific Care in brain injury rehabilitation.

While at HealthSouth Deaconess, her therapists pushed her and challenged her beyond what she thought she could do. Yet, the therapists, nurses and doctors were supportive every step of the way. Jean re-learned how to walk, talk and care for herself and ultimately returned to her optimal level of independence.

On March 1, 2013, Jean was discharged to her home and continued with outpatient therapy at HealthSouth Deaconess. As her outpatient therapy continued, she achieved a personal goal and was able to obtain her driver’s license that August.

Today, Jean remains at home with her supportive husband and three children. She began running/walking and in May 2016, completed a 10 mile race called The River Run that extends over the bridges of the Ohio River.

“I don’t know what advice to give a patient other than that I realize that I would not be where I am if it were not for HealthSouth Deaconess. The therapists were creative and patient with me,” said Jean.
